In modern psychology, the technique of reframing is used very often – it helps to normalize relationships with partners in business and personal life, change the attitude to an unpleasant situation that cannot be changed, reduces the overall level of stress and helps to tune in to a positive. the word “reframing” means replacing the frame of a picture or changing a picture in a frame. In modern psychology, the term “reframing” refers to a special technique, with the help of this you can change your point of view or change the attitude from a certain situation to another – to the exact opposite.
Such a technique does not change the situation itself, but allows you to look at it from the positive side and see new opportunities instead of the problem. In addition, psychological reframing has a certain therapeutic effect on a person: it activates internal emotional and mental resources, awakens a creative approach to solving problems, reduces emotional stress and forms alternative creative behavior. The prevailing stereotypes cause a lot of trouble for most people.
For example, additional assignments at work cause us dissatisfaction, we regard overtime work as an attempt on our personal time, we call development of new technologies a waste of time, and consider an overly demanding manager a tyrant who spoils our lives.
With the help of reframing, we can change our attitude to similar problems. This can be done in several ways.
Method 1. Find the deep benefits in the situation.
If the situation cannot be changed, try to see in it a favorable side for you and focus your attention on the positive. Examples of such reframing may be the following approaches to the problem. At work you were assigned tasks that do not relate to your official duties.
Reframing: new orders make the work more diverse and broaden my horizons. The more I was assigned, the more I manage to do.
Method 2. Noting the negative, find in the situation also a positive side.
This will be easy if you use the word “but”: I had to work very hard for a month, but we finished a large project on time and received an award.
I am not promoted, but I have less responsibility, less stress and I do not need to sit at work until late in the evening.
We have meetings too often, but they always take place during working hours.
This product is too expensive, but it is fashionable, high-quality and durable.
I don’t have money for a car, but I don’t have to solve the parking problem, stand in traffic jams for a long time, buy gas and pay insurance.
Method 3. Compare this situation with past experience and highlight its positive aspects or advantages.
Typical examples of such reframing can be specified approaches.
I am entrusted with a lot of routine work, which does not apply to my direct duties. But it taught me to plan my time more efficiently, work faster and have more time.
I am forced to learn English. But now I can communicate with foreigners without any problems during my trips abroad.
I have too many business trips. But I traveled to many cities, I saw a lot with my own eyes and met interesting people.
Thus, reframing helps us form new points of view on emerging problems, positively and life-affirmingly react to any negative events, get rid of vain worries about situations that cannot be changed, avoid unnecessary stress, retain our inner energy mainstream.
